JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Baylor men's basketball delivered an early statement ahead of the 2026–27 season, overcoming preseason No. 1 Florida in an 82–76 overtime exhibition victory on Oct. 18 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. Led by a breakout performance from sophomore guard Kayden Mingo, the Bears demonstrated the scoring ability, depth and late-game composure that could make them a team to watch this season.

The victory offered an encouraging sign for head coach Scott Drew's squad following a challenging 2025–26 campaign. Although the game did not count toward either team's regular-season record, Baylor's performance against one of the nation's most highly regarded programs provided an early look at what its revamped roster could accomplish.

Kayden Mingo Leads the Way

Mingo emerged as the difference-maker, finishing with a game-high 31 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The Penn State transfer shot 9-of-15 from the field and converted 11 of his 15 free-throw attempts, including nine points in overtime.

His ability to create scoring opportunities proved crucial when the Bears needed a reliable offensive option. Mingo also delivered in the decisive moments, helping Baylor take control after Florida forced overtime with a late basket.

Freshman guard Dylan Mingo added 12 points and eight rebounds, giving Baylor another productive option in the backcourt. The brothers combined for 43 points and 16 rebounds, providing an encouraging first glimpse of their potential partnership.

Isaac Williams IV contributed 15 points, including three three-pointers, while helping Baylor maintain its offensive pressure throughout the contest.

Baylor's Depth Makes a Difference

One of the most encouraging aspects of the victory was Baylor's production beyond its starting lineup. The Bears' bench outscored Florida's reserves 33–3, a significant advantage against a team entering the season with championship expectations.

Baylor also showed improved perimeter shooting, connecting on seven of 17 three-point attempts. Florida, meanwhile, struggled from long range, making just four of 29 attempts.

The Bears finished shooting 45.5% from the field, compared with Florida's 34.7%. Those numbers highlighted Baylor's ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities while limiting the Gators' offensive efficiency.

Depth could become an important factor as the season progresses. Baylor's ability to distribute minutes and receive contributions from multiple players may help the team navigate the physical demands of Big 12 competition.

Composure Decides the Finish

The game remained competitive throughout regulation, with Florida finding a way to tie the score at 68–68 on a jumper with less than a second remaining.

Rather than allowing the late equalizer to shift the momentum permanently, Baylor responded in overtime. The Bears scored 14 points in the extra period, compared with Florida's eight, and converted nine of 10 free throws to secure the victory.

That late-game execution stood out against a Florida team that entered the matchup with high expectations. Baylor's ability to respond under pressure offered an early indication of the team's potential in close contests.

Still, the exhibition also provided areas for improvement. Baylor will need consistent frontcourt scoring and continued defensive discipline as it prepares for the challenges of the regular season.

What Comes Next for Baylor?

The victory over Florida gives Baylor an encouraging foundation heading into the new season, particularly with its new additions already making meaningful contributions. Mingo's scoring performance, the team's bench production and its execution in overtime all provided reasons for optimism.

However, one exhibition cannot determine how a season will unfold. Baylor must translate those strengths into consistent performances once the regular season begins, especially against a demanding Big 12 schedule.

The Bears are scheduled to open their 2026–27 regular season against Northwestern State on Nov. 2 at Foster Pavilion in Waco.

Final Score: Baylor 82, Florida 76 (OT) — Exhibition, Oct. 18, 2026.
