Is Texas Football Running Out of Time to Turn Its Season Around?

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns are approaching a critical point in their 2026 season. After consecutive losses to Oklahoma and Florida, both by a score of 27–24, Texas enters its matchup against Ole Miss needing a strong performance to regain momentum.
Texas is 4–2 overall and 1–2 in SEC play. Although the season is far from over, another loss could make the Longhorns’ path toward competing for the conference title considerably more difficult.
Arch Manning Faces Another Important Test
Quarterback Arch Manning will be under pressure to help Texas find consistency on offense. The Longhorns have remained competitive in recent games, but narrow defeats have highlighted the importance of executing in crucial moments.
Against Ole Miss, Texas will need to sustain drives, capitalize on scoring opportunities and avoid mistakes that allow its opponent to stay in control. A strong performance from Manning and the offense could help the Longhorns regain confidence heading into the second half of the season.
Injuries Add to Texas’ Challenge
Texas must also navigate injury concerns as it prepares for another difficult SEC matchup. Availability along the defensive front could be particularly important against an Ole Miss offense capable of putting pressure on opposing defenses.
The Longhorns will need players across the roster to step up and maintain their assignments. Limiting explosive plays and getting off the field on third down could be key factors in determining the outcome.
Ole Miss Presents a Major Opportunity
Ole Miss enters the matchup ranked No. 7 nationally with a 5–1 overall record and a 3–1 mark in SEC play. Led by quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy, the Rebels present a significant challenge for the Texas defense.
Playing at home gives Texas an opportunity to respond in front of its fans. However, the Longhorns will need a complete performance on both sides of the ball to take advantage of that opportunity.
What Comes Next for the Longhorns?
Texas still has several important conference games remaining, including matchups against Mississippi State, Missouri, LSU, Arkansas and Texas A&M. The results of those contests will help determine how much remains possible for the Longhorns this season.
For now, the focus is on Ole Miss. A victory would provide Texas with a much-needed boost and help restore momentum, while another defeat would increase the pressure as the schedule continues.
Texas will host Ole Miss on Saturday, October 24, at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
