TCU's Defense Delivers in 17-6 Victory Over Baylor to Capture Rivalary Win

Updated: 3 days ago

WACO, Texas — The TCU Horned Frogs delivered a strong defensive performance Saturday night, defeating the Baylor Bears 17-6 at McLane Stadium on October 17. TCU controlled the second half, shutting out Baylor after halftime to secure the rivalry victory and snap the Bears' four-game winning streak.
The victory marked another chapter in the long-running rivalry between the two Texas programs, known as the Revivalry. While Baylor entered the matchup looking to continue its winning momentum in Big 12 play, TCU used timely offensive plays and a relentless defensive effort to leave Waco with the win.
TCU Finds Its Rhythm Through the Air
Quarterback Jaden Craig led the Horned Frogs' passing attack, completing 21 of 36 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns. His ability to connect with receivers downfield helped TCU create separation when the offense needed a spark.
Wide receiver Jordan Dwyer delivered one of the game's biggest performances, finishing with six receptions for 150 yards. His explosive plays helped stretch Baylor's defense and created opportunities for the Horned Frogs to build their lead.
Ed Small also played an important role in the passing game, recording seven receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown. Small opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown reception from Craig in the first quarter, giving TCU an early 7-0 advantage.
TCU's passing success proved to be the difference despite a difficult afternoon on the ground. The Horned Frogs finished with just 33 rushing yards, making their ability to produce through the air especially important.
Baylor Struggles to Find the End Zone
Baylor's offense had opportunities to keep the game within reach but struggled to turn its possessions into touchdowns. Quarterback DJ Lagway completed 22 of 37 passes for 256 yards, but the Bears could not find the end zone against TCU's defense.
Kicker Rhett Armstrong provided Baylor's only points, connecting on field goals of 39 and 32 yards in the second quarter. Those scores brought the Bears within one point at 7-6, giving them a chance to take control of the game after halftime.
However, Baylor's offense could not maintain that momentum. The Bears finished with 310 total yards and managed only 54 rushing yards. Although they recorded 23 first downs, they struggled to finish drives and were unable to score during the second half.
TCU's defense forced Baylor into multiple punts, a fumble, an interception and turnovers on downs during the closing stages. Those stops prevented the Bears from mounting a comeback and allowed the Horned Frogs to protect their lead.
Third Quarter Gives TCU Control
The decisive stretch came early in the third quarter. TCU quickly moved down the field, with Craig connecting with Dwyer on a 67-yard completion to put the Horned Frogs in scoring position. Craig then found Ka'Morreun Pimpton for an eight-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14-6.
TCU continued applying pressure on its next scoring drive, putting together a 14-play possession that ended with a 25-yard field goal. The kick pushed the advantage to 17-6 and gave the Horned Frogs a two-score cushion.
From that point forward, TCU's defense took over. Baylor could not generate the points needed to close the gap, and the Horned Frogs finished the game without allowing another score.
The defensive effort was particularly impressive considering Baylor had scored consistently during its four-game winning streak. TCU's ability to limit explosive plays and force critical stops ultimately determined the outcome.
What the Win Means Moving Forward
For TCU, the victory provides an important boost in Big 12 play and offers a foundation to build on as the season continues. The Horned Frogs showed that their passing attack can produce explosive plays, while their second-half defense demonstrated the ability to close out a competitive rivalry game.
Craig's connection with Dwyer and Small gives the offense reliable options moving forward. However, improving the rushing attack could help TCU become more balanced and avoid relying so heavily on its passing game in future matchups.
Baylor, meanwhile, will need to find answers on offense after being held scoreless in the second half. The Bears' defense continued to perform well, recording four sacks and 10 tackles for loss, but the offense struggled to capitalize on its opportunities. Turning more drives into touchdowns will be a priority as Baylor looks to respond.
Both programs remain focused on the challenges ahead in conference play, but Saturday's result belongs to the Horned Frogs.
Final Score: TCU 17, Baylor 6.
