Updated: Oct 20

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — No. 1 Texas opened SEC play with a statement defensive performance Saturday afternoon, holding off No. 14 Tennessee 20–17 at Neyland Stadium.
The Longhorns entered the matchup 3–0 and faced their first conference test of the season on the road. Texas answered the challenge by limiting Tennessee to 221 total yards and recording 10 sacks, the second-most in a single game in program history.
The biggest performance came from junior edge rusher Colin Simmons, who set a Texas single-game record with 5.5 sacks. Simmons also recorded nine tackles and forced a fumble, earning national player-of-the-week honors from the Bednarik Award, Nagurski Trophy and Walter Camp Award after the game.
Texas quarterback Arch Manning helped the Longhorns establish an early lead. Manning completed 14 of 19 passes for 201 yards, while running back Raleek Brown provided the majority of Texas' touchdowns on the ground.
Brown opened the scoring with a 9-yard touchdown run on Texas' first possession. The Longhorns added a pair of field goals from Gianni Spetic to take a 10–3 lead into halftime.
Tennessee tied the game in the third quarter when Qua Moss returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown. Texas responded with another Spetic field goal before Brown scored his second touchdown of the afternoon on a 4-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
The Volunteers refused to go quietly. Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon connected with Mike Matthews on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 1:22 remaining, cutting Texas' lead to 20–17.
Texas' defense held on from there, securing the Longhorns' first SEC victory of the season and improving their record to 4–0 overall and 1–0 in conference play.
The Longhorns finished with 262 total yards, including 201 through the air. Tennessee recorded 22 first downs compared with Texas' 14, but the Longhorns' defensive pressure ultimately proved decisive.
With the victory, Texas now turns its attention to the Red River Rivalry. The Longhorns are scheduled to face Oklahoma on Oct. 10 at the Cotton Bowl Stadium.
Final: Texas 20, Tennessee 17
