LUBBOCK, Texas — No. 11 Texas Tech continued its undefeated start Saturday afternoon, defeating Sam Houston 49–14 at Galaxy Stadium on September 26 behind a dominant second-half performance and a historic showing from linebacker Austin Romaine.

The Red Raiders improved to 4–0 with the victory, extending their home winning streak to 11 games. Sam Houston dropped to 1–3 after struggling to contain Texas Tech's offense and giving up three interceptions.

While the Red Raiders established control early, Romaine's remarkable defensive sequence helped turn the matchup into a one-sided contest.

Texas Tech Strikes First

Texas Tech opened the scoring in the first quarter when running back Cameron Dickey found the end zone on a one-yard touchdown run, giving the Red Raiders a 7–0 advantage.

The game took a dramatic turn early in the second quarter as Texas Tech's defense delivered a historic performance. Romaine returned interceptions for touchdowns on consecutive Sam Houston offensive plays, pushing the Red Raiders' lead to 21–0.

The achievement made Romaine the first FBS player since 2013 to record two interception-return touchdowns on consecutive plays from scrimmage, highlighting a remarkable stretch for the Texas Tech defense.

Sam Houston Responds Before Halftime

Despite falling behind by three touchdowns, Sam Houston managed to make the game competitive before the break.

Quarterback Landyn Locke connected with Tim Burns Jr. for a 52-yard touchdown before finding Chris Reed for a nine-yard score. The two scoring drives cut Texas Tech's advantage to 21–14 heading into halftime.

After Sam Houston's late first-half push, the Red Raiders faced an opportunity to reestablish control and prevent the Bearkats from gaining additional momentum.

Red Raiders Pull Away After the Break

Texas Tech responded immediately in the second half.

Dickey scored his second touchdown of the afternoon on a 13-yard run, restoring the Red Raiders' two-score advantage. Quarterback Will Hammond followed with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Coy Eakin, extending the lead to 35–14 entering the fourth quarter.

Hammond continued contributing to the offense on the ground, adding a 23-yard rushing touchdown in the final period. Texas Tech then added another score when Thomas Castellanos connected with Malcolm Simmons for a 27-yard touchdown, completing the 49–14 victory.

Dickey finished with two rushing touchdowns and a season-high 91 yards, while Hammond recorded 224 passing yards and a touchdown through the air, along with his rushing score.

Defense Makes the Difference

Texas Tech's defensive performance was a major factor in the victory.

The Red Raiders finished with 470 total yards, including 219 rushing yards, while limiting Sam Houston to 269 total yards. Texas Tech also forced three turnovers, all interceptions, with Romaine's consecutive pick-sixes standing out as the defining sequence of the game.

The defensive production complemented an offense that found its rhythm again after Sam Houston briefly cut into the lead before halftime.

The victory also marked Texas Tech's second consecutive 4–0 start, the program's first such stretch since 2011–13. The Red Raiders completed their nonconference schedule undefeated and carried their momentum into Big 12 play.

Looking Ahead

Texas Tech will turn its attention to conference competition, traveling to face Colorado on October 3. The matchup will provide another opportunity for the Red Raiders to maintain their undefeated record and establish themselves in the Big 12 race.

Sam Houston will have a bye week before returning to action against Liberty on October 8. The Bearkats will look to regroup after a difficult outing against one of the nation's top-ranked teams.

With an undefeated record, a surging offense and a defense capable of producing game-changing plays, Texas Tech enters conference play with significant momentum.

Final Score: Texas Tech 49, Sam Houston 14
