SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals delivered a statement victory Saturday night, defeating the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros 41–16 at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium. UIW used a strong offensive performance and three first-half interceptions to pull away from UTRGV in a Southland Conference matchup on October 17.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Cardinals and gave them an important conference win as they look to build momentum during the second half of the season. UTRGV, meanwhile, struggled to overcome costly turnovers and a limited rushing attack despite showing flashes of offensive potential.

UIW's Defense Sets the Tone Early

The Cardinals established control from the opening play. Defensive back Patrick Batiste intercepted UTRGV quarterback Aidan Jakobsohn on the first play of the game, giving UIW possession near the Vaqueros' end of the field. The Cardinals quickly capitalized, with running back Lontrell Turner scoring on a two-yard touchdown run to give UIW a 7–0 lead.

UTRGV responded with a 37-yard field goal from Brysen Gardner before the Cardinals added a field goal of their own. The Vaqueros later tied the game at 10–10 on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jakobsohn to Corey Holmes.

However, UIW's defense shifted the momentum again when Buddha Garrett intercepted Jakobsohn near the goal line and returned the ball 88 yards. The Cardinals capitalized on the opportunity and continued to pressure the Vaqueros' quarterback throughout the first half.

UIW recorded three interceptions before halftime, turning those defensive takeaways into 17 points. The Cardinals entered the locker room with a commanding 27–10 advantage, leaving UTRGV with significant ground to make up in the second half.

Jayden Hibbler Leads the Cardinals' Offensive Attack

Wide receiver Jayden Hibbler was one of UIW's most productive players, finishing with 95 rushing yards and 92 receiving yards on seven receptions. His ability to contribute in multiple areas gave the Cardinals an important offensive weapon throughout the contest.

Quarterback Emmett Brown completed 21 of 33 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown, helping the Cardinals maintain control after building their first-half lead. Brown connected with Hibbler for a 15-yard touchdown reception during the second quarter, adding to UIW's growing advantage.

The Cardinals also found success on the ground. Damashja Harris scored twice on rushing touchdowns, while Turner added a score of his own. Harris finished with 42 rushing yards, providing another option in an offense that consistently found ways to reach the end zone.

UIW's balanced attack helped the team finish with 41 points, allowing the Cardinals to control the game's pace and prevent UTRGV from mounting a serious comeback.

UTRGV Struggles to Overcome Turnovers

For the Vaqueros, the biggest obstacle was protecting the football. Jakobsohn finished with 255 passing yards and one touchdown but threw three interceptions, giving UIW several opportunities to extend its lead.

Clint Thomas Jr. provided a bright spot for UTRGV, recording four receptions for a career-high 82 yards. Holmes added the team's lone passing touchdown, while running back TJ Dement scored on a two-yard rushing play in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, linebackers Jaiden Haygood and Spencer Rich each recorded 12 tackles. Rich also added a tackle for loss as the Vaqueros attempted to slow down UIW's offense.

Despite those individual performances, UTRGV finished with just 56 rushing yards and was unable to overcome the deficit created by its turnovers. The Vaqueros were held scoreless in the third quarter, allowing UIW to extend its lead to 34–10 before adding another touchdown in the fourth.

What's Next for Both Programs?

UIW improved to 3–4 overall and 2–2 in Southland Conference play following the victory. The Cardinals will look to carry their momentum into their next matchup against McNeese on Saturday, October 24. Continued defensive pressure and more consistent offensive execution could help UIW build on its performance against UTRGV.

The Vaqueros fell to 3–4 overall and 2–3 in conference play. UTRGV will look to regroup before traveling to face Central Arkansas on October 24. Reducing turnovers and establishing a stronger rushing attack will be important priorities as the team works to bounce back.

For UIW, the 41–16 victory offered a much-needed result after a difficult stretch. For UTRGV, the loss highlighted the importance of ball security and execution against conference opponents.

Final Score: UIW 41, UTRGV 16.
