UTRGV Looks to Bounce Back Against Central Arkansas After Loss to UIW

Updated: Oct 20

EDINBURG, Texas — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros enter Week 9 looking to respond after a difficult 41–16 loss to the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals. UTRGV fell to 3–4 overall and 2–3 in Southland Conference play following Saturday's defeat in San Antonio. Now, the Vaqueros turn their attention to a nonconference road matchup against Central Arkansas on Saturday, October 24, with an opportunity to regain momentum before returning to conference competition.
The loss to UIW exposed several areas UTRGV must address, particularly turnovers and offensive consistency. However, the Vaqueros have already demonstrated their potential this season, including a 13–3 victory over Southeastern Louisiana the previous week. If UTRGV can return to the form it showed in that win, the team has an opportunity to make a strong response.
Ball Security Becomes a Priority
One of UTRGV's biggest challenges against UIW was protecting the football. Quarterback Aidan Jakobsohn threw for 255 yards and a touchdown, but three interceptions prevented the Vaqueros from sustaining offensive momentum. Although UTRGV managed to tie the game at 10–10 during the first quarter, the Cardinals capitalized on turnovers to build a 27–10 halftime advantage.
Moving forward, Jakobsohn and the offense must find ways to limit costly mistakes while continuing to create opportunities through the passing game. Jakobsohn has shown the ability to move the football through the air, and maintaining that production without giving opposing defenses extra possessions will be critical.
Wide receiver Clint Thomas Jr. also provided a bright spot against UIW, recording four receptions for a career-high 82 yards. His performance gives the Vaqueros another reliable option as they prepare for Central Arkansas.
UTRGV must also find more consistency on the ground. The Vaqueros finished with just 56 rushing yards against UIW, making it difficult to establish a balanced offensive attack. Improving the running game could help take pressure off Jakobsohn and give the offense more options on important downs.
The Defense Must Continue Setting the Tone
Despite the loss, UTRGV's defense has shown it can compete against strong opponents. The Vaqueros entered the UIW matchup following a 13–3 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, in which the defense played a major role in limiting the Lions' scoring opportunities.
Linebackers Jaiden Haygood and Spencer Rich continued to produce against UIW, recording 12 tackles apiece. Rich also added a tackle for loss, while defensive back Jordan Ford recorded an interception.
The challenge now is turning those individual performances into more consistent team results. Against UIW, the Cardinals took advantage of short fields and converted opportunities into points. UTRGV will need to limit explosive plays, improve its ability to get off the field on third down and give its offense more opportunities to respond.
A strong defensive performance against Central Arkansas could be especially important if the Vaqueros' offense needs time to regain its rhythm.
Central Arkansas Presents a New Challenge
UTRGV's next test comes against Central Arkansas on Saturday, October 24, in Conway, Arkansas. The 4 p.m. kickoff gives the Vaqueros another opportunity to compete away from home before resuming their Southland Conference schedule.
The matchup will require UTRGV to execute more consistently on both sides of the football. Central Arkansas will look to take advantage of playing at home, while the Vaqueros will aim to limit mistakes and establish control early.
For UTRGV, the priorities are clear: protect the football, improve the rushing attack and maintain the defensive intensity that helped produce the victory over Southeastern Louisiana. Avoiding another slow stretch after halftime will also be important as the Vaqueros look to finish stronger.
Following the Central Arkansas game, UTRGV will return home to face Lamar on October 31. That conference matchup could carry significant importance as the Vaqueros work to improve their position in the Southland standings.
The Road Ahead for UTRGV
At 3–4 overall, UTRGV still has time to improve its record and build momentum during the second half of the season. The loss to UIW was a setback, but the Vaqueros have already shown they can play competitive football when their offense and defense work together.
The upcoming matchup against Central Arkansas offers an opportunity to correct mistakes before a challenging stretch of conference games. A cleaner performance from Jakobsohn, improved production on the ground and continued leadership from the defense would give UTRGV a stronger foundation moving forward.
The Vaqueros now face an important test of their ability to respond to adversity. How they perform in Conway could help determine the momentum they carry into the final weeks of the regular season.
