Boerne Defeats Davenport 30-21 in Battle of Unbeatens

Updated: Oct 20

GARDEN RIDGE, Texas — What began as a highly anticipated battle between two undefeated teams ended under the threat of lightning Friday night. Boerne defeated Davenport 30-21, but the game never reached the fourth quarter after severe weather forced officials to stop play.
Both teams entered the matchup at 2-0, making the contest one of the most intriguing non-district games of the week. The intensity on the field was matched by the weather surrounding it as thunderstorms moved into the area.
With 1:12 remaining in the third quarter, lightning in the area forced officials to suspend the game. Players and coaches were sent off the field as officials waited for the weather to clear.
The delay lasted long enough that the game was eventually called, ending Davenport's opportunity to mount a fourth-quarter comeback. Boerne was awarded the 30-21 victory, improving to 3-0 on the season.
Before the lightning brought the game to an early conclusion, Boerne's offense had produced several big plays. Running back C. Combs led the way with an outstanding 310 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.
Quarterback Grant Sweeney also made an impact, completing 11 of 21 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Davenport continued to fight throughout the shortened contest. Quarterback T. Torrez threw for 115 yards and a touchdown, while running back Zayden Garza added 110 rushing yards on 16 carries.
The lightning delay ultimately became one of the biggest storylines of the night. Instead of a traditional four-quarter finish, both teams were forced to watch the game come to an unexpected ending because of the weather.
Boerne left the field still undefeated at 3-0, while Davenport dropped to 2-1.
For Boerne, the victory keeps its perfect start alive. Davenport will now look to regroup and continue its season after a game that ended in circumstances neither team could control.
Final: Boerne 30, Davenport 21.
