SAN ANTONIO, Texas — What was expected to be one of the most anticipated matchups of Week 1 ended prematurely Friday night as severe weather, lightning and a stadium power outage forced the cancellation of the Judson Rockets' matchup against the Johnson Jaguars at Heroes Stadium.

The highly anticipated contest featured two San Antonio-area programs looking to make an early statement in the 2026 season. Johnson entered the year with high expectations, while Judson aimed to open its campaign against a major local opponent.

However, the weather quickly took center stage, preventing either team from completing the season opener.

Weather Brings Play to a Halt

The game began Friday night, but heavy rain, strong winds and lightning moved through the San Antonio area, forcing officials to suspend play during the second quarter.

Players and coaches left the field as officials monitored the weather conditions. The delay continued while storms remained in the area, leaving both teams waiting for an opportunity to resume the matchup.

The situation became more complicated when the stadium lost power, making a return to action impossible.

After approximately a quarter and a half of play, officials ultimately canceled the game, leaving both programs without a completed Week 1 contest.

Johnson Quickly Regroups

For Johnson, the cancellation brought an unusual end to a season opener that had generated considerable anticipation.

The Jaguars quickly shifted their attention to the following week, returning to the field against Austin Vandegrift and earning a convincing 38–7 victory.

Johnson followed that performance with another dominant showing, defeating Odessa 37–0 to improve to 2–0.

The Jaguars' response demonstrated their ability to move past the interrupted opener and focus on the remainder of their schedule.

Judson Looks to Rebound

Judson also had to put the canceled matchup behind it as the Rockets prepared for their next opportunity.

The Rockets returned to action against Hutto on September 4 but fell 67–41 in a high-scoring contest. Judson later secured its first victory of the season with a 51–41 win over Clemens on September 18.

Although the canceled opener prevented Judson from completing its first game of the season, the Rockets continued working toward greater consistency as the schedule progressed.

An Unusual Start to the Season

The Judson-Johnson matchup will be remembered less for the action on the field and more for the circumstances surrounding its cancellation.

What began as one of the area's most anticipated opening-week games became an unusual interruption to the high school football season. Severe weather, lightning and the stadium power outage ultimately prevented the two programs from determining a winner.

For both teams, the focus quickly shifted toward the games ahead rather than a matchup that never reached its conclusion.

Final Result: Canceled due to weather and power outage.
