SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The MacArthur Brahmas came through when it mattered most Thursday night, holding off the Holmes Huskies 27-21 in a competitive San Antonio matchup at Heroes Stadium.
Both teams entered the game 1-0, setting up an early-season battle between two programs looking to build momentum. Holmes had opened its season with a 28-21 victory over Laredo Martin, while MacArthur entered after a 32-10 win over Burbank.
The matchup quickly turned into a physical battle, with both teams finding ways to move the football. MacArthur's rushing attack proved especially important, as the Brahmas finished with 237 rushing yards and added 66 yards through the air.
Holmes refused to let the game get away. The Huskies continued to answer throughout the night and kept the pressure on MacArthur deep into the second half.
MacArthur ultimately made enough plays on both sides of the ball to protect its lead and secure the 27-21 victory.
The win gave MacArthur a 2-0 start to the season and continued the Brahmas' strong opening stretch. It was also a significant result in a rivalry that has seen plenty of close games, with Holmes entering the matchup holding a 10-6 advantage in the all-time series.
For Holmes, the six-point loss was its first of the season. The Huskies would later defeat Holmes 27-21, while continuing their district schedule in District 29-6A.
MacArthur continued its season with another victory before eventually falling to LEE 16-3 on Sept. 10.
The 27-21 result gave MacArthur an early-season statement and showed that the Brahmas could close out a tight game against a familiar San Antonio opponent.
Final: MacArthur 27, Holmes 21.
